When an Inspire volunteer went to feed the animals at the Marsascala rehabilitation centre early yesterday, she found the park had been vandalised overnight.

Paint pots and rollers were strewn all over the back of the park, a space used by the non-profit organisation to provide therapeutic, education and leisure services to people with disabilities. The walls and floor of the surrounding area were splashed with paint.

“We believe vandals jumped over the back wall of the park and broke into our crafts room. They used the paint we provide for disabled children as part of their therapy,” park manager Giovanna Mirabile said, expressing relief all the animals were safe.

Police are still investigating but it is believed it was a group of teenagers

“I imagine they all went back home with paint all over their clothes and shoes – we are appealing to parents to come forward if they have any information,” Ms Mirabile said.

It is believed that the accident happened late on Sunday, hours after volunteers fed the animals.

Ms Mirabile said she was overwhelmed by messages of solidarity the NGO received from the public yesterday.

The therapy sessions will be limited for the rest of the week.

Although the extent of the damage is not yet known, as the police investigations are still underway, she estimated that with the help of volunteers, the place should be back in shape by next week.

She appealed to the public to help through donations: send a text message to 5061 7359 to donate €2.33; 5061 8080 for €4.66; 5061 8962 for €6.99; and 5061 9215 for €11.65.
