A total of 22 classes will be participating in the tablets pilot programme.

These include13 primary schools across Malta and Gozo, three church schools, two independent schools and the school in Wardija catering for people with special needs.

From now till the end of the year 44 teachers will be familiarising themselves with the device. And between next October and March, the tablets will be given to  pupils of the selected classes.

They will be allowed to take the device home.

In all, 13 suppliers are participating in the programme with brands including Micrsosoft, Samsung and Apple, Google, Lenovo and Acer. Nine operate with Android whereas one operates with IOS and another with Microsoft.

Addressing a news conference at the Gzira Primary school which is taking part in this project, Education Minister Evarist Bartolo said that the quality of the hardware and software submitted was top notch. He stressed that is was an educational project and not a technological one.

Based on this experience the exact date of the nationwide roll out would be determined some time in the scholastic year 2015/16. The tablets loaned for this project amount to some €200,000.

The participating state schools are: Siġġiewi, Msida, Gżira, Marsascala, Cospicua, Għajnsielem-Sannat-Victoria in Gozo, Pieta', Paola, Mellieħa, Żurrieq, Baħrija and the Dun Manwel Attard Young Adult Education Resource Centre.

Other schools will be on standby with other volunteer teachers ready to relieve the selected teachers if there are not able to proceed with the pilot for one reason or another.
