Sarah Ann Gatt, 33 of Sta Venera was accused in court today of having defrauded 103 people of a total of €30,000 in order to pay back usury debts.

Police Inspector Ian Abdilla told the court that Ms Gatt had tricked the victims by leading them to believe that she could purchase on their behalf electronic items from Sicily at very cheap prices.

The amounts taken from the victims was small, with the maximum being €2,000, but there was a large number of victims, the inspector said.

Ms Gatt pleaded not guilty to fraud, misappropriation, relapsing and committing a crime during the operative period of a suspended jail term.

Bail was granted against a personal guarantee of €3,000.
