A man who had been ordered to pay €2,500 in damages caused to an old well in Valletta was today charged with having caused involuntary damaging a historic site.

The case happened in August 2005.

The accused, Duncan Fenech 32, of Mosta had been converting a property in Merchants' Street into a shop. Excavation works were being carried out in the basement when an old well was damaged.

He was subsequently arraigned before the civil court which ordered him to pay €2,500 in damages.

The criminal arraignment took place today.

Lawyer Joe Giglio told the court that that in terms of the charges, his client was potentially facing six years in jail. The damages, he said, were not extensive and they had been paid for. He suggested a fine of €2,500 to reflect the damages.

Magistrate Giovanni Grixti is expected to hand down judgement in October.
