A Magistrate is to decide next week whether a man accused of a series of cat and dog killings in Mosta is fit to undergo criminal proceedings.

The accused, Nicholas Grech, 37, was arraigned last week and is being held at Mt Carmel forensic unit.

When the compilation of evidence against him continued this morning, psychiatrist George Debono presented a report on the accused as requested by the court. He said that during the time when the incidents occurred, the accused was not taking prescribed medicine and had a relapse of mental issues that he had experienced in the past.

Mr Grech had in the past undergone court proceedings, which were extinguished because of his mental state.

Dr Debono said the accused had suffered the same mental health issues as in the past. While he could understand the difference between right and wrong, when it came to considering the consequences of his actions, he opted to go ahead anyway because it made him feel good.

Magistrate Karol Peralta will hand down a decision next week on whether Mr Grech is fit to undergo criminal proceedings
