The official video to Christabelle's Eurovision Song Contest entry Taboo was released on Friday to acclaim across the internet.

The three-and-a-half minute video depicts a dystopian world in which the Maltese singer faces down a gladiator, in what could be interpreted as a visual metaphor for the song's theme about overcoming stigma surrounding mental illness.

As a woman cowers before an imposing warrior-like figure, Christabelle enters the arena and helps her to her feet, before facing down her own adversary.

Taking its visual cues from Hollywood blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road, the video's high production values have seemingly struck a chord with Eurovision Song Contest fans online.

Within hours of being released, the music video had amassed well over 200 comments, with praise flowing in from people across the globe.

"Let's be honest, this is the best music video from Eurovision 2018 so far," wrote one user on YouTube, as another agreed "this is stunning!"

Other users were struck by the polished video. "Damn, this looks so expensive," wrote one user of social media site Reddit, as another YouTube user said the video gave the song "a more expencive [sic] touch".

Christabelle will have to qualify from the contest's second semi-final on May 10 if she is to be in with a chance of winning the Eurovision Song Contest, which this year will be held in Lisbon on May 12.
