Some of the candidates from all parties for the June MEP elections have already declared their intention of contesting while others have still to decide.

Compared to the June 2009 elections, the 2004 elections were just an amusing jamboree. This time the very basis of Maltese culture, Maltese civilisation and Maltese existence are in danger.

We have in Malta right now about 13,000 illegal immigrants, a serious proportion of our population. Let us face this reality; let us not bury our heads in the sand. The Maltese are very worried, very anxious and terribly angry.

The Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition have both expressed grave concern at this invasion and burden. The Maltese population, irrespective of politics, is united and strongly opposed to the continuation of this problem.

Some think that there will be a pause this winter before another onslaught of dinghy bursting near Malta as from May, in seven months' time, just before we vote or do not vote for the candidates. In reality there will be no pause at all as; every time there is a nice day in winter, immigrant boats will arrive anyway, the engine will stall and the boats will take in water. At the end of next summer, the population of illegal immigrants in Malta will be 13,000 + 3,000 = 16,000. The June 2009 MEP election will take place in the middle of this hot, major issue.

Everybody thinks, including the vast majority of readers of The Times participating in an online survey, that the recent Malta-EU agreement on "voluntary burden sharing" (sic) is just a farce, an operetta, a wonderful idea for a Christmas pantomime. The government has failed us; not just the PN voters but all voters: PN, MLP and smaller parties.

We voters from all parties are looking for serious, intelligent, responsible and patriotic persons to fight for us in Europe to compensate for our government's failure to do so. This will be the big and major issue of June 2009 - the immigrant invasion issue.

I call on all candidates to openly state their thoughts and feelings, their serious practical plans to do something concrete about us Maltese voters from all parties to have a real pair of strong hands - not ballerina hands -I at the helm.

We want action. We do not want Euro-ballerinas, Euro-fashion designers expressing Euro-spittle. We do not want fancy bread; we want ħobżna tal-Malti (our Maltese bread)!

If the candidates do not show us as of now a serious intention to act for us voters of PN+MLP+smaller parties in the loss-of-our-country issue, they will be wasting their time and efforts in their campaign to become an MEP. We shall not vote for them. Just forget it!
