Some months ago I wrote a letter under the heading Stop Bullying Malta. Now, some four or five months later, I say stop this invasion. And also add that our politicians must get together, be united and save Malta from becoming yet another Britain. I will not be around but the time may come when our schools will not be allowed to hang a crucifix in their classrooms.

I am mad, stark raving mad at our politicians who cannot agree among themselves in order to stem this invasion, which is not only critical but also a disaster to our economy. Let us not start calling each other racists. Nobody called those people racists when we were applying for EU membership and some thought we were going to be invaded by Sicilians looking for jobs. During the last war I served with and commanded brave black troops who bled when we bled and died alongside their white comrades. But, as one Maltese trade unionist once said, "enough is enough". It is not the colour we are against, it is the numbers.

This last weekend was marked by three events that shocked me and many like me. The first was when the leader of the Malta Labour Party said that Malta should not sign the agreement regarding burden sharing but then, when asked, would not say what his alternative would be - probably because he did not know, which is surprising coming from a (now) former MEP. May I ask him what exactly did he do to help solve this immigration disaster for Malta when he was in Brussels the past four years?

The second shock I got was when reading about the over 100 illegal immigrants being brought to Malta by an Italian warship. According to the report (September 29) they were located by the Italian Coastguard when they were in Libyan search and rescue waters but by the time help arrived (how conveniently for the Italians and the Libyans) the boat had drifted into Maltese territorial waters. So poor old Malta has to clothe, feed and pay another 129 (adding another group that arrived that same day) poor souls saved from the Mediterranean for the next God knows how many years.

The third piece of news that upset me was the report that Maltese lawyer Katrine Camilleri has been nominated for the European of the Year Award for her "tireless campaign for the rights of asylum seekers in detention". As Dr Camilleri is assistant director of our Jesuit Refugee Services it would be interesting to hear from JRS what exactly they are doing to help solve this problem for Malta and the Maltese.

Our politicians must get off their backsides and stand up and be counted. It is now literally an invasion. After all when there is no seating on a bus the driver calls out "standing room only", when there is no room for further standing he shouts out "Full-up" and if the passengers keep getting on, those already standing will fall off the back of the bus. This is what is happening in Malta and it will be the Maltese falling off the island.

Malta's Armed Forces, the police and MMDNA nurses who visit these immigrants in the detention and open centres have to face the day-to-day problems under great pressure from all quarters. Our politicians must unite and tell Europe and the world we cannot take any more illegal immigrants be they black, yellow, white or khaki. The bus is full, Malta is full.
