Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi yesterday evening warned parents to evaluate the latest modification announced by Labour Leader Alfred Sant about his reception class plan.

If implemented, the class will divide children putting them in different categories - the fast runners attending private and church schools and the repeaters attending state schools.

Speaking during an activity in Kalkara, Dr Gonzi referred to Dr Sant's declaration last Monday that the reception class proposal will not be adopted by private and church schools.

"I hope parents realise that this will effectively mean a disadvantage to all those children who attend government schools.

"This will mean children attending private and church schools will not have to repeat a year meaning that they will finish school earlier than their state educated schoolmates.

They will enter post-secondary schools and university before those attending state schools.

"This will create an injustice and parents should not let Dr Sant do this to their children.'

Calling the latest declaration by Dr Sant another electoral blunder, Dr Gonzi said that during this campaign, the MLP is proving to be a party of inconsistencies and surprises.

"We are discovering a new MLP proposal every day that passes. Do we really want our country to be governed in this way?' he asked.

"People today know what we mean in education. Our record speaks louder than words.

"Parents can rest assured that their children will acquire the best skills with PN leadership."

Dr Gonzi said that the number of graduates from University under PN administrations shot up to 31,000 between 1987 and 2007. Under Labour's years in government, from 1971 to 1987 only 3,500 students graduated.

During the televised activity, Ivan Bartolo - managing director of a Maltese IT company, 6pm, recounted his rise to success 'as a direct effect of Malta's EU membership.'

"Before Malta's accession, my company used to employ seven people with a turnover of €698,800 (Lm300,000). Today we employ 120 people with a turnover of €13.98 million (Lm6 million). This could not become possible if Malta stayed out of the EU.

"Malta is now an equal partner with other member states and we are treated on the same playing field as our counterparts in the IT world."

Calling on the electorate to use their vote wisely on March 8, Dr Gonzi said that nothing can be taken for granted and the PN has to assure that every possible vote is given to the party.

"We will be continuing to try to convince people until the last minute of this campaign. A PN victory is not in the bag yet and nothing is guaranteed.

"We have, by far, the right policies and the best programme, but we need to make sure everyone understands what we are proposing and what's at stake if Alfred Sant is elected.'
