Australian Robbie McEwen won the second stage of the Giro d'Italia yesterday after a sprint finish.

The Predictor team rider edged out Italians Paolo Bettini and Alessandro Petacchi to take the 205-km stage from Tempio Pausania to Bosa in Sardinia.

Italy's Danilo Di Luca of the Liquigas team finished in the same time as McEwen and seized the overall race lead from his team-mate and compatriot Enrico Gasparotto who was delayed by a crash.

Today's 181-km third stage is from Barumini to Cagliari in the south of Sardinia.
