A four-year project to offer professional development programmes for staff and students at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (Mcast) was launched last Tuesday by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

The project involves the offering of vocational degrees over a three year period in all Mcast institutes for students who complete successfully the college's Higher National Diploma, as well as providing Master's degree programmes and short courses for Mcast academic staff.

Mcast will shortly issue a call for applications for the first group of its vocational degree programmes for students and staff at its institutes of Art and Design, Business and Commerce, Electronics and Electrical Engineering, and Information and Communication Technology.

The project is being undertaken in collaboration with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, a world-renowned German research institution linked with industry and almost every university in Germany. Through Fraunhofer, Mcast will have the advantage of dealing with only one institution while gaining access to almost all German universities.

The project is funded by the European Social Fund under the 2007-2013 EU Cohesion Policy.
