Malta should utilise EU opt-out and join Austria and Italy in declaring the country a GMO-free zone, Alternattiva Demokratika’s Simon Galea said.

In a statement, AD reaffirmed its position against the cultivation of GMO crops.

It said that apart from the introduction of GMOs in the food chain, GMO crop cultivation posed other major threats including cross pollination, something of particular relevance to small countries.

Ecosystems could be badly affected following GMOs cross pollinating with other species altering present species, Mr Galea said.
