The third round from the 2010 GPS World Championship was held last weekend in the waters off the stunning coastal town of Poltu Quato, Sardinia.

Poltu Quato is considered among many as the fastest growing destination for jet-set millionaires to base their super luxury yachts in a unique, hidden landscape dominated by nature.

The rare presence of UIM president Raffaele Chiulli in Sardinia indicated the importance of being earnest in these circumstances, the championship having survived a turbulent patch due to the untimely withdrawal of the financial-backing P1 Management just days from the beginning of this year's series of races.

Addressing all teams in the championships, Dr Chiulli said the organisation was in a transitional phase.

"Together we shall work for a better and sustainable future," he said.

"As UIM, we want to strengthen the co-operation between competitive power-boating and the marine industry, thus capitalising on the shared knowledge of all parties involved."

This sort of encouragement engineered a successful weekend of racing in a way that the outcome of a tough and rigorous competition never ceased, both in Sprint and Endurance races.

Italian duo Marco Pennesi and Giampaolo Montavoci never let go and, once again, their diesel-powered boat, Metamarine, got the top spot overall for a leading command in the Evolution Class standings.

In Sardinia, two-time SuperSport champion Aaron Ciantar finally was back to form, picking second place overall in Evolution and sending a clear message that the Maltese pilot still means business on board the Ukrainian Spirit Chaudron.

The team's outstanding performance somehow scratched their poor debut in Yalta when the engines failed miserably in a way that Ukrainian Spirit also had to miss out on the Malta Grand Prix of the Sea last month.

But finally, as they say, it was third time lucky for Ciantar and team-mate Viktor Shemchuk although there was no good fortune in their positive result in Poltu Quato but only true quality and sheer determination.

Italian SuperSport team Big Sergio got the better of table-toppers Baia Attolini in a fierce fight with spinning scares and numerous overlapping that kept the leadership being changed continuously until the last lap.

Now, Big Sergio are second in the overall standings, just 29 points behind Baia Attolini.

Meanwhile, for the second successive time, Spirit of Belgium duo, Belgian Patrick Huybreghts and English pilot Shelley Jory, were involved in a serious incident (the first in Malta last month).

This time the mishap occurred during the SuperSport power-pole position race.

Both Huybreghts and Jory were injured but luckily saved in time by the ever-efficient safety team after their boat dipped its nose into the water at 83mph, crashed to pieces and sunk after a spin off the tricky wakes at that particular time.

The next races are now being planned for September. The venues will have to be chosen from either Portugal, Belgium or Sicily.
