Mario Bonello added a European Masters gold medal to his array of titles yesterday after winning the 100m race in Hungary.

The veteran sprinter endured a difficult start in sweltering heat but recovered well to storm to victory in 11.08 seconds, finishing well clear of his rivals in the 30-35 age-bracket.

Last year, Bonello announced himself to the Masters scene by winning a gold medal in the 200m and silver in the 100m in Finland.

Alan Zammit, a former national champion, was the other Maltese athlete taking part in the Euro Masters Championships.

On Friday, he placed fourth in his 100m heat (50-55 years) but just failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

Zammit was left to rue his luck as he finished 17th out of 37 runners, missing out on the semis by just one place.
