FOI council member and FOI Environment Committee chairman Godwin C. Micallef held a meeting with Volker von Ludowig and Helen Backhaus from the Rethmann Group in Germany earlier this month.

This group, the seventh largest waste disposal company in the world and the second largest in Germany, is represented in 14 countries, has some 8,000 employees and in 2002 registered a turnover of €722 million.

The Rethmann Group representatives explained that the group offers a wide range of services in waste management and that they had come to Malta to investigate the possible involvement of the group.

During their short visit to Malta Mr von Ludowig and Ms Backhaus also met officials from the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA), WasteServ and other organisations involved in waste management.

Their programme was organised by FOI Environment Committee Members Mary Gaerty and Doris Sammut, who are also joint managing directors of Green Skip Services Limited.
