There have been ample contributions on the issue of divorce. I wish to add my own suggestion about how to go about helping the electorate decide on such a vital possible change to our life’s scenario.

Having finished debating in the House, I feel the parliamentarians, together with the “yes” and “no” movements, should reach a consensus about what the electorate should know before going to the polls. There should be an easy-to-read leaflet covering what we mean when we say we want divorce to become legal in our country. This leaflet should be in point form and in easy-to-understand language. Items such as the following should be included:

1. Who would be eligible for divorce vis-à-vis earnings.

2. Whether or not maintenance will be guaranteed.

3. Whether the government will in any way be held accountable for any shortcomings on the part of the divorcees should maintenance not be forthcoming, which accountability is automatically transferred into pensions and taxes to sustain them.

4. If divorce will be applicable also to marriages contracted solely in Church and, therefore, exclusively governed by ecclesiastical rights and duties.

5. What divorce will be expected to ameliorate in the country.

6. What the couple will be expected to produce to prove that they had been trying to improve their relationship for four years with no success, during which years there were no third parties involved.

The list is not exhaustive. The electorate should receive such a document well before the appointed time of the referendum so as to be able to understand the implications of their “yes” vote for divorce and decide accordingly.
