The 53-hour marathon in aid of the Dar tal-Providenza kicks off today with the participation of 40 players.

The participating players have already undergone two selections. The first lowered the number proceeding to phase II to 54 in line with criteria set by the coaches and technical director Michael Magro.

After the selection for phase II, all players continued training at Air Malta's premises. Phase II included a 12-hour volleyball trial, held between June 19 and 20, followed by a 24-hour trial from June 26-27. In both trials, all players were divided into teams.

Both trials were held at Dar tal-Providenza, the residential homes for the handicapped in Siġġiewi, under the watchful eyes of Fr Martin Micallef, the director, and the residents. After these two events, the number of players was brought down to 40, so as to have five teams of eight players each throughout the marathon.
