A 40-year-old drug addict who yesterday admitted to stealing a motorbike to sell it for spare parts was jailed for a year.

Richard Borg, of Sliema, who is unemployed, took the bike on June 16, dismantled it and tried to sell it for spare parts, according to Police Inspector Arthur Mercieca.

Mr Borg also pleaded guilty to relapsing.

Legal aid lawyer Patrick Valentino asked Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera to take into consideration the fact that his client had admitted to the charges at a very early stage of the proceedings.

Mr Borg declared in court he had a drug addiction and the magistrate made a recommendation to the prison director to ensure that the necessary treatment is given.

Police Inspector Carlos Cordina also prosecuted.
