Melita agrees with Godfrey Muscat (The Sunday Times, July 25) that the current situation which obliges sports fans to pay good money every month for two subscriptions to watch European football is unfair and should be addressed immediately.

Far from colluding with Go to keep what Mr Muscat refers to as a 'monopoly', Melita was the first to approach Go in 2009 to discuss ways of making foreign football broadcasts accessible to the clients of both companies.

Through our own initiative, we were willing to enter these discussions despite the fact that at the time Melita owned exclusive rights to broadcast all European top-tier football leagues such as the Uefa Champions League, Serie A and Premier League, while Go owned none of these top-tier properties.

During these past weeks Melita has offered to kick off discussions about the issue once again, but unfortunately Go showed no willingness to arrive at a solution. On two separate occasions Melita offered Go a possible solution which would have had long-term benefits for the consumer while also following the natural business principles for both companies.

However, the financial model that was proposed in order to pave the way for further discussion was refused by Go both during a meeting of the Parliamentary Social Affairs Committee and even later, when it was presented in writing.

Since all the proposals presented by Melita were repeatedly turned down, we anticipate that given the lack of a long-term solution this scenario will keep repeating itself every time football rights change platform. Unless Go show themselves willing to discuss a possible solution, millions of euros will continue to leave Malta straight into the pockets of rights holders and league owners instead of creating jobs in Malta and giving the consumer ample choice.

Melita remains open to discussing content-sharing with all relevant parties for the long-term benefit of all concerned. Discussions on the issue are still underway through the Parliamentary Committee on Social Affairs and we are confident that a solution will be found the near future.

In fact, the committee recently issued letters to several bodies involved in this discussion to pursue all possible routes leading to a fair solution for all consumers and operators.
