Recently my parents were here on holiday and on a trip to Mdina they decided to buy an English newspaper from the kiosk at the front entrance.

On the newspaper's masthead it clearly states: "Printed today in Malta €1.80." We were charged €2. I was given a fiscal receipt which does state €2 (pictured).

I asked why they charge 20c more than anywhere else and was told: "Because that's what it costs here!"

I know there are no price controls in this day and age but was under the impression that items such as newspapers are not allowed to be sold at more than the cover price. I contacted the printers who confirmed this. The Consumer and Competition Department said it is nothing to do with them. So in other words, don't buy a newspaper from the kiosk outside Mdina.
