World-renowned DJ Hardwell said yesterday he would be closing off the Isle of MTV next month, days after concerns were raised about the fact that this year’s line-up of artists had not yet been announced.

The Dutch DJ and music producer tweeted: “Excited to announce I’m closing off @IsleofMTV at Malta, 25th June. See you there.”

DJ Hardwell, whose real name is Robbert van de Corput, was ranked as the world’s topmost DJ in a survey by DJ Magazine.

However, reactions have been mixed with some welcoming him as the biggest DJ and others expressing disappointment, saying they had never heard of him.

Moreover, it still leaves the event short of the oomph normally associated with a star-studded line-up.

Sources told Times of Malta that no artist had yet been confirmed for the concert, adding they were “seriously worried” that the headline acts had not been finalised.

The sources expressed concern that it was too late for promotion and advertising of the event to truly have an impact abroad.

The free event draws some 10,000 tourists to the island who would all need to book their flights and locate suitable accommodation beforehand.

Over the past two years, the headline acts were announced in April.

The Isle of MTV is arguably one of the most attended free open-air events in Europe and attracts crowds of around 50,000.

The Malta Tourism Authority had said that “the line-up will be announced early next week” while Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association president Paul Bugeja said he had not received any negative feedback from hoteliers regarding June bookings.

However, he pointed out that this could be because general trends this year were much better than in 2013.
