Squash: Nicol David, the world number one from Malaysia, filled the only significant gap in her trophy cabinet when she regained the British Open title yesterday. David claimed the trophy with an 11-6, 11-6, 11-6 win over Nour El Sherbini, the youngest ever finalist at the age of 16, and the first Egyptian woman finalist. For David it was her fourth British Open title.

Auto Racing: Australian Ryan Briscoe won the pole position for the 96th Indianapolis 500, edging Canada’s James Hinchcliffe in Saturday’s qualifying session for the May 27 oval IndyCar classic. Briscoe turned in a four-lap qualifying speed average of 226.484 mph around the famed 4km Indianapolis Motor Speedway, then watched from his car as Hinchcliffe and American Ryan Hunter-Reay tried in vain to overtake him.

Basket, NBA: Kevin Durant hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 13 seconds left to lift Oklahoma City Thunder to a 103-100 win over Los Angeles to put the Lakers on the brink of elimination. With the score tied 98-98 Durant hit a 25-foot jumper over Lakers’ Metta World Peace, capping a fourth quarter rally for the Thunder who trailed for much of Saturday’s game.

Badminton: Denmark and South Korea, two of the main rivals to home nation China in badminton’s prestigious Thomas and Uber Cups team championships, be-gan their campaigns with convincing wins in Wuhan yester-day. Both Denmark and South Korea in the men’s Thomas Cup won their ties comfortably 5-0, showing favourites China they may not have it all their way in a week that is key preparation for the upcoming London Olympic Games.
