Two Maltese players, Oliver Said and Alexander Petterson, have just participated in the Gatwick International Premier Tournament.

Said exceeded expectations as he claimed the best performance award. At the start of the tournament, Said was seeded 51st out of 57 participants. However, he had the better of a number of players rated above him to finish 16th overall.

Said recorded a 61 per cent score... a remarkable achievement given that he faced superior opponents. He won four of his nine games, drew three and lost only two.

It is no surprise that the mathematics teacher from St Martin’s Institute easily attained the best performance improvement when compared to his starting rating.

Said expects to see his rating shoot up by 57 points after his fine performances in the Gatwick tournament.

Petterson faced a number of players from different countries, including a female internationl Master, and did enough to defend his current international rating.
