Żurrieq won their duel with fellow strugglers Msida St Joseph courtesy of a solitary goal scored early in the first half.

The match could have gone either way with Żurrieq opting to defend their early lead while Msida’s efforts to level matters proved futile.

The win lifted Żurrieq to ninth place on 12 points, three ahead of Msida, Sta Venera and Siġġiewi.

Żurrieq were off to a flier, taking the lead from their first attack. Alistair Camilleri beat Msida goalkeeper Agius with a long-range drive.

The goal spurred Msida into action. They may have pulled level on 37 minutes when Alessandro Pirrone’s low cross picked out Fernando De Andrade who failed to connect with only the Żurrieq goalkeeper to beat.

Msida threatened again two minutes later. The influential Pirrone put in another good cross but Borda’s header skimmed the bar.

Żurrieq regained control after the interval as they began to show more tenacity in their play.

The Reds could have doubled their lead on 62 minutes when Josef Briffa found Vukonic but the latter’s header was blocked by Agius.

The last chance of the match fell Msida’s way. In a swift break, substitute Crupi was anticipated by Żurrieq goalkeeper Ellul as he was about to shoot.
