Two nurses will be sponsored by the Department of Elderly and Community Care to further their studies on dementia at postgraduate level at the University of Stirling.

This was one of the government’s initiatives in the field of dementia over the past years, including a €9 million investment in the John Paul II block at St Vincent de Paul that, for the first time, provided dementia-friendly wards, said the Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly and Community Care, Mario Galea.

A total of 130 people working in the field of the elderly have received training at the University of Stirling on new methods of dementia care.

The government is working on a national plan for dementia, which, among other objectives, aims to raise awareness on the condition and diagnose it at earlier stages.

Mr Galea noted that several policies listed in the national plan were already underway.
