After winning their opening match against Portugal, Malta yesterday succumbed to a 20-8 defeat to group favourites Russia.
The Maltese began the match with a good tempo but were erratic in their conclusions, missing some man-up situations and scoring opportunities, including a penalty, in the first two sessions as Russia stormed to a 10-goal lead.
After the change of sides, Malta regained their composure and fought bravely to reduce the margin against the formidable Russians, scoring eight goals to Russias’ 10. Keeper Alan Borg Cole distinguished himself with a string of fine saves while Matthew Zammit worked hard in centre, besides scoring a brace.
Niki Lanzon, scorer of three goals, orchestrated matters while Steve Camilleri also struck a hat-trick with some powerful long-range shots.
Last night, Malta were back to winning ways when they came from 6-2 down to edge hosts Denmark 11-10 in a thrilling match.
Today, Malta will face Bulgaria.
