A Civil Court yesterday dismissed an application filed by four couples from Qrendi who had requested that no land-based fireworks be let off in Rokku Buhagiar Square, Qrendi.

The application for the issue of a warrant of prohibitory injunction was filed by George and Concetta Cassar, Peter and Giorgina Schembri, Rosanna and Andrew Ellul and Girolamo and Maria Carmela Bugeja against the Police Commissioner and the Attorney General. Mr Justice Geoffrey Valenzia pointed out that when the application was filed, the authorities had already issued a permit allowing the fireworks display. Two band clubs held the land-based fireworks display at the square in question. A warrant of prohibitory injunction, the court noted, would be issued to prevent an occurrence (in this case the issue of a permit) but it could not be utilised to force the authorities to take action.

The court concluded that the couples' application was unfounded and so dismissed it.
