Two catering establishment owners were yesterday fined €1,164 (Lm499.57) each for illegally employing people.

Magistrate Silvio Meli heard Edward Saliba and Palabiyik Zafer plead guilty to the charges.

The court heard that since Mr Saliba's wife is in hospital he temporarily employed someone else to substitute her at Buccaneer Restaurant in Buġibba. Defence lawyer Joe Mifsud, appearing for Mr Zafer, told the court that his client employs six people at the Oz Sofra Kebab House in Buġibba. One of the employees fell ill and this person sent a substitute.

Police Inspector Nezren Grixti prosecuted.

Lawyer Edward Debono appeared for Mr Saliba.
