Peter Paul Zammit is being appointed Police Commissioner replacing John Rizzo who will take over as head of the Civil Protection Department, the government said this evening.

Mr Zammit, 52, is a legal procurator from Marsascala. He has served in the police force for 25 years until 2009 and has been inspector and superintendent.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Cassar will be appointed head of the Security Services.

Mr Cassar, 56, of Zabbar, joined the police force in 1979 and has served as an inspector, superintendent and assistance commissioner working in the Criminal Investigation Department, the Drug Squad and Economic Crime Unit, among others. He is a lecturer at the Police Academy and the European Training College.

Mr Rizzo, who has been serving as a Police Commissioner for the past 12 years, will also be the government’s consultant on internal security.
