The home for people with disability, Id-Dar tal-Providenza, is appealing to people’s generosity ahead of its annual fundraising marathon as it gears up to open a new residential home in Balluta.

Fr Martin Micallef, the charity’s director, said 115 people with a disability currently make use of Id-Dar tal-Providenza’s residential services at its main home in Siġġiewi and several other community homes around the country.

“Every person has his/her own particular needs and we try to fully respond to those needs. We need funds to ensure that our services continue to respect their dignity and address their individual needs,” Fr Micallef said.

Over the past year, apart from its regular services, Id-Dar tal-Providenza opened a new specialised music room in Siġġiewi as well as touch-ups at other homes to ensure they remain suitable for residents.

People with a disability should be offered the choices and opportunities that everyone has the right to enjoy

Fr Micallef said such work would continue in 2019, which would also see more extensive refurbishment at the Siġġiewi community home and the opening of a new residence in Balluta.

“Without the generosity of the Maltese and Gozitan population we would not be able to offer these services,” he said.

The charity will be hosting its annual ‘Feast of Generosity’ on Tuesday, a day-long fundraising marathon, which, in previous years, covered as much as a quarter of its €4.5 million a year expenses.

Apart from fundraising, the event, held at Siġġiewi, offers a chance to meet up with residents, see the projects being carried out and spread the home’s message that people with a disability should not only be treated with respect and dignity but offered the choices and opportunities that everyone has the right to enjoy.

The day begins at 9am with Mass celebrated by Archbishop Charles Scicluna, followed by various performances and other entertainment on the main stage.

The event will be broadcast on leading TV channels.
