The Maltese football fraternity was on Monday mourning the loss of Herbert Messina Ferrante who passed away after a long illness, aged 80.
A dental surgeon by profession, Messina Ferrante is fondly remembered in the football circles as an administrator, having served as president of Sliema Wanderers for six years after he was elected at the head of the Blues in 1987.
During his time as Sliema president, he led the team to a memorable league title in season 1988-89.
In 1990, the Wanderers also won the FA Trophy following a 1-0 win over Birkirkara in the final.
Messina Ferrante also formed part of the Malta FA administration where he served as vice-president.
During his career he received the Sportsmanship Award in 1980 and was also included in the Members the National Order of Merit by Malta President George Abela in 2012.
