Samba Tounkara was in excellent form for Tarxien Rainbows as they returned to winning ways, beating Lija Athletic 4-0 in a clash between the bottom two teams in the BOV Premier League.

A win which enables the Rainbows to move fourth from bottom, on the 18-point mark, one ahead of St. Andrews and two ahead of Naxxar but the latter two have a game in hand.

Lija, on the other hand, remain anchored at the bottom of the table with five points from twenty two matches. This was the eleventh defeat on the trot for Joseph Galea’s side and they could be condemned to Division One this weekend should Naxxar win and St. Andrews get at least a draw from their respective clashes with Hamrun Spartans and Sliema Wanderers.

The Rainbows held the initiative right from the start, taking the lead on the 17th minute. Goalkeeper Luke Bonnici managed to block an angled shot from the left by Ricardinho but off the rebound, Andre Scicluna hit home.

Samba Tounkara was not to be denied on the 31st minute when off a cross by Ricardinho from the right, he slotted the ball past Bonnici.

Five minutes from the end of the first half, Tarxien scored the third goal, once again thanks to Tounkara, served on the left by Gabriel Aquilina, whose fine shot hit the foot of the upright before ending at the back of the net.

Tarxien increased the lead on the 79th. Matthew Brincat’s fine first-time effort, following a cross by Tounkara from the left, was partially saved by Bonnici but off the rebound, Gabriel Aquilina
