Three eyewitnesses involved in a massive fight which broke out in Hamrun last month between a pregnant teenager and several members of a rival family, gave their version of events in court today.

Natasha Bugeja, a 19-year old expectant mother, is facing charges of attempted murder of seven persons, whom she allegedly tried to run over, slightly injuring three of them and damaging four vehicles.

Other charges relate to harassment, being in possession of a pointed weapon and breaching public order.

Four injured, car damaged in big Hamrun fight

Lisa Pace, whose son Brandon was stabbed to death last year in another violent episode in Hamrun, recalled the commotion which had erupted on January 7 when she had accompanied her daughters and two grandchildren to a local confectionery.

No sooner had her daughters Donna, Samantha and Naomi got out of the car, than they were met by the accused who was standing in the middle of Abela Scolaro Street.

As Natasha began to hurl insults in their direction, an argument broke out and a great commotion ensued, the court was told.

However, she said she was gripped by fear upon catching sight of Kurt Grech, known as ‘in-Nemes’, the man currently facing charges over the murder of her son, Brandon. She called her other son, Dylon on his mobile asking for assistance.

The latter, the second eyewitness to testify, recalled how he had answered his mother’s frantic call, and driven to the scene of the fight together with his girlfriend, Denise Camilleri.

In the commotion, he had seen Natasha Bugeja’s Golf being driven in the direction of his sister’s Toyota Vitz slamming into the back door before driving off and then turning back, headed in their direction. Natasha Bugeja had been at the wheel, the witness said.

The man told the court how he had grabbed his sister, pulling her out of the path of the oncoming car to avoid her being crushed between her own vehicle and accused’s car.

The man’s girlfriend, Denise Camilleri, also testified how upon their arrival at Abela Scolaro Street, her boyfriend Dylon had tried to break up the fight. Kurt Grech had been there too, hurling abuse in their direction, the court was told.

Although she too had seen the accused’s car slamming into the car of Donna Pace, her boyfriend’s sister, she could not tell who had been at the wheel, on account of all the commotion around her, Ms Camilleri explained.

Before testifying, each of the witnesses was duly cautioned over the possibility of self-incrimination.

Inspector Elliott Magro prosecuted.

Lawyers Franco Debono and Arthur Azzopardi were defence counsel.
