‘Legends With Legs’, an exhibition by Year 5 pupils attending the Gozo College Victoria Primary School, also known as the ‘Happy School’, was inaugurated at the Cittadella Cultural Centre in Victoria. The exhibits on display were completed by the students over the past months during a Kreattiv project.

The children had the opportunity to express themselves through art in an environment without books, tables and chairs, uniforms or bell ringing. In fact, through the experience of an immersive workshop held at the Gozo Visual and Performing Arts School in Xewkija, they discovered Gozitan legends, which they then retold to others through art, music, drama and movement.

Teachers, who led this project, chose three legends Sansuna, the Gaw Gaw and Atlantis. They rewrote them into modern English, making them suitable for younger audiences. The legends went on to form the basis of three workshops, which were also documented by videos.

Eventually, a short film was produced for each story completed by the individual student groups. The video clips were screened during the inauguration, together with nine pieces of art, three from each group.

The school management team said that the project has offered a unique experience for the students and clearly demonstrated that children, when given space and opportunity, are able to go beyond expectations.

Present for the inauguration were Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana, who is also a parent of two pupils attending this school, and Gozo College principal Denise Mifsud, who praised the initiative and said that such experiences serve to teach children to be more creative and imaginative.

The exhibition is open until January 7, Monday to Sunday, from 9am until 3pm.
