An inquiry probing political interference claims into a drugs case in Gozo will probably be a whitewash, the Opposition leader said this evening.

The inquiry was ordered after Malta Today reported that a statement given to the Gozo police during a drug-related investigation in summer 2013 was changed following a meeting involving "two senior politicians" and family members of the suspects. The conclusions of the inquiry are expected to be made public tomorrow.

Speaking on Net TV programme Mhux Għax Jimpurtani, Simon Busuttil said the Prime Minister should have already divulged the names of the ministers or MPs who had dabbled in the Gozo drugs case.

But Dr Busuttil cast doubt over the conclusions of the inquiry, reminding viewers it was in the hands of a former Labour Party candidate who has been tasked with probing fellow party officials.

"This is not a normal case. This is a drugs case where a police statement was changed after politicians intervened."

Dr Busuttil criticised the lack of investment in roads, schools, old people's homes and hospitals, among others, saying it was no wonder that the government had registered a budget surplus for the first time in years.

"I would have rather the government cut down on waste and retained the projects. That's what I would do as prime minister."

PL: BUSUTTIL WANTS TO BE JUDGE AND JURY

In a reaction, the Labour Party accused Dr Busuttil of arrogance, saying he wanted to be judge and jury over every case and every inquiry.

It said the Opposition leader tried to discredit all cases involving members of the government unless the outcome was what he wished for.

Yet, the PL said, the only prime minister who ever acted on the basis of inquiries was Joseph Muscat.

Dr Busuttil failed to act on the outcome of inquiries or reports involving Beppe Fenech Adami, Jason Azzopardi or Chris Said.
