University fees paid by foreign students have more than tripled in almost 10 years, as the number of foreigners increase, figures released in parliament this evening show.

Fees paid by EU and non-EU students were just over €1.5 million for the academic year 2008/2009. The figure increased to €2.2 million the following year, gradually increasing to reach €5 million for the year 2015/2016.

A total of €2.9 million has been paid for this year's first semester.

There are 11,653 students undertaking full- and part-time courses at the university, Education Minister Evarist Bartolo said. As far as full-time courses are concerned, there are 7,867 Maltese students, with another 438 coming from EU member states and 433 from non-EU states.

Another 2,783 Maltese nationals, 99 EU nationals and 33 non-EU are following part-time courses.
