The Speaker of the House, Anglu Farrugia, said this evening that there had been no unauthorised leakage of information from his Office or the Office of the Auditor General regarding a report in Times of Malta on Saturday about the Audit Office report on the Gaffarena case.
Parliamentary Secretary Michael Falzon, who is being investigated by the auditor over the way how property belonging to Mark Gaffarena was expropriated, yesterday complained to the Speaker, saying that it appeared that not only had the newspaper and others been told about when the report would be tabled, but the conclusions of the report appeared to have been leaked. This, he said, undermined the dignity of the House and harmed the Office of the Auditor General.
The Speaker said he had had a meeting with the Auditor-General and his deputy and it resulted that there had been no leakage from that office. Nor had any journalist approached the office.
Furthermore, he said, no leakage had taken place from his own office, especially as the report had not been received yet.
The Speaker noted that the newspaper story did not indicate that the conclusions of the audit report were known or had been leaked.
