Justice Minister Owen Bonnici this evening avoided giving a direct reply to a question in parliament by Opposition leader Simon Busuttil over whether he has confidence in Ray Zammit (former acting police commissioner) as head of the new agency running the warden service.
Dr Busuttil asked if the minister could have confidence in Mr Zammit as a person responsible for enforcing the law when he was involved in a number of scandals.
Dr Bonnici said he had given all the necessary explanations when he was confronted by journalists last week.
He said that contrary to the leader of the opposition, he was not arrogant with journalists and had not told any of them Iddahhaqx. Rather, he had spoken at length. Some had understood what he was saying, others less so.
Dr Busuttil said the minister had not replied to his question. He asked the minister why he had retained Mr Zammit when his involvement in various scandals showed he was not worthy of his position.
The minister said that in terms of the House, a question could not be repeated. He reiterated that he had given a lengthy explanation to journalists and Dr Busuttil had heard what he had said, and commented about them.
