Andrei Agius yesterday reached an agreement to continue his playing career in Italy with Lega Pro side Sassari Torres following his unexpected departure from newly-promoted Serie B side AS Latina.

Last season, Agius formed part of the Latina team that clinched promotion to the second-tier of Italian football after they beat Pisa3-1 on aggregate in the play-offs final.

However, in the close season Latina decided to conduct a complete overhaul to their first-team squad and parted ways with several players who helped the club win promotion.

Malta defender Agius was one of the players released. However, he was subsequently approached by officials from Sassari Torres who offered him a two-year contract.

Last season, Sardegna team Sassari Torres were crowned Serie D champions after topping the standings with 68 points from 34 matches. They finished eight points clear of nearest rivals Sarnese and Torre Neapolis.

With eight Lega Pro Seconda Divisione teams winning promotion, Sassari Torres, who are under the guidance of coach Davide Boncore, have now set their sights on playing in the Prima Divisione in 2014-15.
