Many people are feared dead and others are missing after a flash flood in a remote mountainous area of Afghanistan, officials said yesterday.

Surobi district police chief Shaghasi Ahmadi said a flash flood in the mountainous region east of the capital, Kabul, has killed “tens of people” and other are missing.

Mr Ahmadi said an accurate death toll is not available as mud houses were washed away. He said the district’s main hospital was seriously damaged in the flood.

President Hamid Karzai said he was saddened to hear the news.

Surobi has a number of rivers running through it. It is also rife with Taliban activity. Flash floods are common in the area.
