The Kalkara mayor yesterday appealed to the authorities to fix a dangerous gaping hole at Rinella Bay’s street edge before the area becomes popular with bathers.

Anyone driving in the vicinity cannot miss the huge gap on the edge of the road, leaving the perimeter wall suspended in air with no support at the bottom.

The damage was initially caused by the March 10 storm, dismantling parts of the supporting wall of the road built on the perimeter of the bay.

About two weeks after the storm, members of Transport Malta’s maritime section drilled a hole in the surface of the road to assess the damage underneath.

But the repair works never took place leaving a dangerous hole on the surface of the road and an equally dangerous “cave” beneath it, Kalkara mayor Michael Cohen told a news conference.

He explained that the local council was responsible for the maintenance of roads but not for the damage caused beneath.

He said the area was unsafe and called on the authorities to fix it before summer started.
