Berlin-bound Air Malta passengers will not be affected by the delay in opening the German capital’s new main airport, the airline said.

Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport was supposed to replace the city’s two current hubs – Schoenefeld and Tegel – from June 3.

But it was announced last Tuesday that its opening has been delayed indefinitely due to fire safety problems, angering politicians and the aviation industry.

Air Malta currently flies to Berlin Tegel, but was set to switch flights to Berlin-Brandenburg from June 3 – when Tegel was scheduled to close.

However, Tegel will now remain open “until the autumn” and an Air Malta spokesman said the airline would continue to fly there until the opening of the new Berlin-Brandenburg.

Air Malta is in the process of contacting affected passengers about the change, he added.

According to the latest information received by Air Malta, Berlin-Brandenburg will not open until at least August 4. The new date should be confirmed by the middle of next week.

“At that stage we will decide how to proceed with respect to Air Malta flights scheduled for after August 4,” the airline spokesman said.
