Former Sliema Wanderers defensive midfielder Robbie Buttigieg passed away yesterday, aged 67. He had a successful career with the Blues with whom he played throughout the best days of his career in the 50s and 60s, winning various honours including three successive league titles between 1964 and 1966.

Buttigieg, father of ex-Malta international defender John, also made two appearances for the national team, both friendlies against Libya. In these home and away internationals, in February and March of 1966, Malta won 1-0 on both occasions.

The technically-gifted Buttigieg was also a prominent member for the Pick RAF and Services selections.

The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 8.30 at the parish church in San Gwann.
