Gzira United 0
Zejtun Corinthians 1

\n

This was an unexpected setback for Gzira who lost their unbeaten record after going down to relegation-troubled Zejtun. Gzira had to play for most of the match with ten players after having Charles Gatt sent off in the first half.

Zejtun were the more enterprising side early on and after 11 minutes Mario Farrugia went close to open the score. On 35 minutes, Gatt was red-carded for dissent but just before the break Matthew Cocks saw his effort going just wide.

Zejtun hit the goal that mattered 10 minutes after the restart. Jesmar Abela was on the right spot to hit home from a Gerada free-kick.

James Galea was unlucky not to score again for Zejtun but his shot hit the Gzira woodwork.

Gozo FC 2
Mellieha 0

Gozo FC took full advantage of Gzira's slip-up during the weekend to join the Maroons at the top of the standings after beating Mellieha at the Gozo Stadium on Tuesday.

The hosts were the better side throughout. They were dangerous from the beginning, going close to scoring with shots from Meilak and John Camilleri.

Mark Camilleri put Gozo ahead after 23 minutes. He could have increased his team's lead but missed two clear chances when facing the Mellieha goalkeeper.

Mellieha had a good patch early in the second period and could have equalised in the 61st minute but substitute Wayne Borg St John saw his shot saved by Xuereb.

Gozo made sure of the points in the 66th minute from a fast counter-break concluded by Chris Camilleri.

Attard 0
Vittoriosa Stars 0

Promotion contenders Attard were held to a goalless draw by Vittoriosa Stars who had the better chances to open the score.

The Stars created the first goal-scoring opportunity when Albert Bonnici headed just wide from an Adami cross and then an effort by Sandro Calleja was saved by Spiteri.

In the 50th minute, Attard's Jason Borg saw his shot cleared off the line by Xuereb but Vittoriosa were left to rue their missed chances and finally had to settle for a point.

Zurrieq 0
St George's 1

A Nazzareno Abela solitary goal saw St George's moving closer to the top positions in the standings but Zurrieq are now in deep relegation trouble.

The Saints dictated the run of play for most of the time.

After just ten minutes Abela hit the bar with a firm header and in the 25th minute a Keith Darmanin free-kick just missed the target.

After more missed chances from St George's, Abela scored the winner in the 66th minute when he nodded inside the Zurrieq net a Johan Spiteri cross.

Dingli Swallows 1
Zebbug Rangers 1

Zebbug, yet again, failed to keep up the pace with the other promotion chasers as they were held to a draw by lowly Dingli.

Rangers went surging forward in attack from the word go but Dingli goalkeeper Mark Abela made some timely interventions to deny Mark Ciantar and George Saliba.

Dingli almost broke the deadlock, through Michael Cutajar, but in the 34th minute George Saliba fired an unstoppable drive past Abela.

Seven minutes after the break the scores were level when Cutajar hit home Dingli's equaliser.

Darren Attard could have snatched the points for Dingli but fluffed his chance with an open goal.

MIA Division Three

Sta Lucija 3
Mgarr United 2

Sta Lucija obtained their first victory this season at the expense of Mgarr who succumbed to their eighth defeat so far.

Roderick Mangion scored first for Sta Lucija but Matthew Schembri made the scores level for Mgarr soon after. However, Sta Lucija went in for the break 2-1 up thanks to a Kurt Grima goal after a fine solo move.

In the 51st minute, Sta Lucija increased their lead after a Daniel Camilleri own-goal. But Mgarr did not give up and reduced the arrears six minutes later when Michael Grech scored after an indecision in the Saints' box.

Mgarr pressed hard for a third goal and went close on various occasions but Sta Lucija held tight for a hard-earned victory.

Qormi 1
Birzebbuga 1

This clash between two teams in the upper part of the standings ended all square with Birzebbuga completing the match with ten players when Jason Saliba got a late red card.

Qormi dictated the run of play at first and went close through Michael Borg Olivier, Clyde Grech and Steve Baldacchino.

Seven minutes after the restart, Qormi took the lead when a Grech cross-shot deceived the Birzebbuga defence.

It did not take Birzebbuga long to score an equaliser though as Jean Pierre Abdilla hit home in the 60th minute from a Prendergast cross.

Qormi again assumed the initiative but were found wanting in front of goal. Saliba was sent off for a double caution in the 85th minute with the bar coming to Birzebbuga's rescue in stoppage time on a Mark Tabone drive.

Referee: Ian Miller.

Sirens 2
Pembroke Athleta 2

Pembroke lost the pace with the top teams in the league after throwing away a two-goal lead against the unfancied Sirens side.

Pembroke were already 2-0 ahead inside the opening 15 minutes thanks to goals from Jeffrey Fenech and Joseph Gauci who surprised goalkeeper Keith Galea from a free-kick.

Simon Copperstone reduced the arrears in the 35th minute and Sirens' bid for an equaliser was made easier when Pembroke's Jeffrey Fenech was sent off in the 57th minute for an off-the-ball incident.

Sirens threw caution to the wind and deservedly drew level six minutes from time from a Patrick Zammit free-kick.

Referee: Glen Tonna.

Kirkop United 0
Sta Venera Lightnings 2

Two first-half goals saw the Lightnings winning three precious points to keep their promotion hopes alive as Kirkop succumbed to their second upset of the season.

Kirkop enjoyed the upperhand at first but on 32 minutes Sta Venera forged ahead from an excellent Andrew Hili first-time effort. Then, in first-half added time, Jeffrey Zammit lobbed home Sta Venera's second goal.

Kirkop regained the initiative after the break but the best chances were created by Sta Venera, now very much in the picture at the top rungs of the standings.

Referee: George Bitri.

Fgura United 2
Gudja United 3

Stephen Orlando was the protagonist here as he scored Gudja's winning goal in added time to boost his team's outside chances of promotion. This was Fgura's third defeat in the league. Their promotion bid has now received a serious setback.

Gudja attacked for long stretches during the first period and went close through Leslie Burke and Jason Bartolo but in the 28th minute Fgura's Vince Testaferrata broke the deadlock.

Two minutes later, Orlando headed in from a corner and 12 minutes after the break Brian Gilford made it 2-1 for Gudja.

Fgura went all out searching for an equaliser and deservedly made it 2-2 from a low Elvin Gauci drive.

The match seemed heading for a draw but three minutes into stoppage time Orlando was on the right spot to score a dramatic winner.

Referee: Alex Arena.

Gharghur 3
Ghaxaq 1

Two late goals earned Gharghur a hard-earned victory over Ghaxaq in a match during which two players were sent off.

Ghaxaq opened the score after 12 minutes from a Ray Sciberras penalty, awarded for a foul on Brian Barbara. In the 26th minute, Gharghur were also awarded a penalty for a foul on Kris Vella Petroni but John Schembri's shot from the spot hit the upright.

Just before the break Gharghur were unlucky again when Seychell's shot came off the post.

Gharghur's cause was further complicated in the 54th minute when Vella Petroni was sent off for dangerous play but they were still strong enough to draw level with a Schembri goal.

Ghaxaq were also reduced to ten players when Matthew Axiaq was sent off for a double caution.

Gharghur took their chances well in the late stages, goals from Schembri and Daniel Bonello earning them three useful points.

Referee: Andre Arciola.
