Czech President Vaclav Havel will be conferred with an honoris causa degree during his state visit to Malta on Tuesday.

President and Mrs Guido de Marco will be attending the ceremony at the university church in Valletta.

Mr Havel, who is the first president of the independent Czech Republic, is expected to arrive tomorrow night.

He is scheduled to attend a tree planting ceremony at San Anton Palace on Monday and will later be hosted to a state dinner.

Mr Havel is also expected to hold meetings with Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami, among others.

The Czech Republic is among the front-runners for European Union membership.
