The KSU`s annual general meeting was a clear omen of the disastrous and farcical events that would occur a few days later during the KSU executive elections. The AGM was a depiction of the hopeless future facing Malta, and is a glaring warning to anyone dreaming of a better future to leave this country as soon as possible.

There I sat in the midst of a crowd of politician-worshippers - among a supposedly indicative sample of the future`s more intellectual few! The hall was visibly divided into two directly-opposed magnetic forces. I `daringly` penetrated both magnetic fields and as a result, I am still suffering from the consequent killer-glares two weeks later!

The six-hour performance was a bubbling pot of all you cannot imagine - ranging from useless insults and who-to-vote-for instructions, to organised bus-loads of support, party-consultancy prior to the voicing of opinions and pre-election flyers with the appropriately-coloured background.

The ignorance and lack of opinionated undergraduates that filled the hall that day was revolting! Not to mention the direct control from politicians, party-secretaries and even the presence of a government minister at the elections the following week!

A trace of hope lies in the fact that only a relatively small percentage of university students were present at the AGM and bothered to vote. However, I somehow suspect this is a reflection of apathy rather than protest.

On a more positive note, I would like to congratulate the chairperson of the AGM for his effort, and partial success, in controlling the rude, rowdy, and undisciplined crowd as far as was humanly possible! He was dealing with a flock of sheep and bi-coloured parrots after all!
