Zebbug Rovers moved closer to their best ever placing in the Gozo FA's top competition after thrashing Xaghra United 7-2 last weekend to consolidate their third spot in the standings.

The Rovers, a relatively new team in Division One, have never managed to place better than the fourth position in previous seasons.

In another match, Victoria Hotspurs beat Ghajnsielem to ensure survival, thus condemning Xaghra United to Division Two football next season. Sannat and Gharb Rangers are the two promoted sides.

Xaghra United 2
Zebbug Rovers 7

Introducing several young players in their starting formation for the clash with Zebbug, Xaghra United were unable to match the Rovers who proceeded to record one of the most emphatic victories of the season.

However, Xaghra did manage to share the exchanges with their opponents early on and took the lead in the 22nd minute through Joseph Mercieca.

Franco Magrin levelled the scores soon after but nine minutes before the break, Xaghra regained the lead, John Camilleri hitting home after a fine solo effort.

Zebbug never threw in the towel, though, and before the half-time whistle, they were leading 3-2 after quick goals from Mahjoub Touali and Victor Egere.

It was Zebbug all the way after the restart, as the Rovers scored four other times without reply through Egere (2), Charles Mercieca and Magrin.

Referee: Anton Zammit.

Victoria Hotspurs 3
Ghajnsielem 0

These were three precious points for the Hotspurs who made sure of their status thanks to a fine victory over Ghajnsielem.

The Blacks were a demoralised lot knowing that rivals Nadur had wrapped up the title the previous weekend.

The Hotspurs saw more of the ball in the early stages but had to wait until the 35th minute to open the scoring when veteran Joe Falzon placed the ball behind Attard from close distance.

Falzon doubled the Citizens' lead soon after the break and 18 minutes from time it was 3-0 after a fine Isaac Mopi goal.

Referee: Carmel Attard.

Sannat Lions... Div. Two champions

The clash between promoted teams Sannat Lions and Gharb Rangers saw the former claiming the Division Two honours with a sound 6-1 victory to crown a fine season with the league championship.

By half-time, Sannat had practically secured the points and the title as they enjoyed a comfortable lead. Mark Muscat scored three times, Abdul el Mutalib hit a brace and Mark Formosa notched up the other for the Lions.

Gharb's consolation goal arrived in the 86th minute through Victor Caruana.

In another Second Division match, Kercem Ajax and St Lawrence Spurs earned a point each after a 2-2 draw. Kercem opened up a two-goal lead with goals from Christian Sylvester and Charlie Azzopardi.

Sylvester missed a penalty in the 52nd minute. Kercem paid dearly for this miss as the Spurs grabbed two late goals through Matthew Francalanza and Aldo Formosa to make it two-all.

GFA Cup

Zebbug Rovers qualified for the quarter-finals of the GFA Cup after a 3-2 victory over Xewkija Tigers.

At the end of normal time, the score was 2-2 but in extra-time, Victor Egere scored a golden goal for the Rovers who now play Kercem.

In the quarter-finals, Nadur beat Victoria Hotspurs 4-1, with Eduardo do Nascimento scoring a hat-trick for the winners.

In the semi-final, Nadur meet the winner of the Zebbug-Kercem tie.
