Young wrestling hopeful Jason Zammit will return home from a hectic weekend of competition in Belgium with a surprising silver medal hanging around his neck after reaching the final of his category.

Zammit, 17, was in Kruibeke where he figured in a tournament of a certain level which attracted hundreds of wrestlers from all parts of the globe.

In Saturday's qualifying phase, Zammit topped his 69kg pool at the expense of opponents from the UK and France. In yesterday morning's semi-final he ousted a German rival but then failed to carry his momentum to the final later on in the day and was beaten by a wrestler from the Emirates to settle for a silver medal.

In all, 12 wrestlers were competing in the 69kg competition for cadets.

In Belgium, Zammit was accompanied by technical adviser Abraham Vassallo.
