The European Youth Olympic Festival gets underway in Tampere, Finland, today. Malta will be fielding athletes in three different sports, namely, athletics, judo and tennis.

In track and field, Andrew Cassar Torreggiani, who took part in the COJI Games in Majorca last May, will figure in jumps. The 17-year-old has a personal best of 6.80m in long jump and 13.95m in triple jump.

This year, Steve Camilleri, also 17, managed to get personal bests of 11.59 in 100m, 22.62 in 200m and 50.83 in 400m.

This helped him to qualify for the COJI Games, which he attended in May, and EYOF, where he will be running in the 200m and 400m.

Brenda Galea, 15, and 14-year-old Patrick Georgiev will be representing the country in tennis.

Galea is currently the no.1 U-16 player and Georgiev placed first in the U-10, U-12 and U-14 junior categories.

The judo team will be composed of Jeremy Saywell, 16, and 15-year-olds Shawn Farrugia and Isaac Bezzina.

Saywell will compete in the 60kg category, Farrugia 50kg and Bezzina will be taking part in the 73kg class.

Envic Galea is the chef-de-mission. Other officials making the trip to Finland are Maurice Spiteri (athletics), Venelin Georgiev (tennis) and Alexander Bezzina (judo).
