Mia Division Two

St Andrews 0
Xghajra Tornadoes 1

Xghajra finally won their first match in the championship after 13 unsuccessful outings. Driven by the excellent saves of goalkeeper Michael Carter, Xghajra scored a late winner to surprise the Saints.

As expected, St Andrews dictated the run of play and after 14 minutes a Michael Mangion header skimmed the wrong side of the post. Carter effected difficult saves to stop shots from Roberto Pisani and Junior Sank. At the other end, in a rare Xghajra counter-break, Jovil Abela failed miserably in front of goal.

Xghajra played better after the break but it was Carter again who stole the limelight as he dived to stop a Sank effort. Hyzler was also denied by the alert Greens' goalie as the Saints grew more frustrated as the minutes ticked away.

Right on the stroke of time, Xghajra scored the winner, the decisive goal coming from Alex Azzopardi.

Zebbug Rangers 0
Mellieha 1

Mellieha defender Hubert Vella scored the all-important goal in this match which saw two players, one from each side, receiving marching orders from referee Marco Borg.

The Rangers dictated the run of play early on, going close through George Saliba and David Micallef. In the 29th minute, Zebbug's George Saliba headed just over from a Keith Farrugia free-kick. Mellieha goalkeeper Buttigieg was on the right spot to deny Mark Ciantar with a fine save. Mellieha almost broke the deadlock at the other end but Mario Debono's drive went just wide.

Mellieha ventured forward after the break but in the 64th minute they suffered a blow when Kevin Gauci was sent off for a second booking.

Zebbug took the initiative but it was the northerners who scored what proved to be the winning goal, Vella heading home from a Debono corner.

Zebbug were also reduced to ten players when Malcolm Borg was shown the red card 13 minutes from time for dangerous play.

Mia Division Three

Birzebbuga St Peter's 1
Melita Afc 1

Melita are firmly in the driving seat in Division Three even though they failed to win this match against strong contenders Birzebbuga.

Melita, still unbeaten, are now four points clear at the top and likely to win promotion. They showed the better football during the opening half and early on went close through free-kicks from Adriano Fenech and Andrew Naudi, both neutralised by the well-positioned Birzebbuga goalie Richard Mifsud.

Jean Pierre Abdilla had a good chance for the southerners to open the score but in the 21st minute Naudi scored for Melita, only for that strike to be annulled for offside. Melita did take the lead just before the break when Matthew Borg collected a Degabriele throughball before thumping the ball home.

Birzebbuga, however, drew level soon after the restart. Sapiano partially stopped a Prendergast shot but from the rebound Mark Ellul was quick to put the ball inside the net.

Birzebbuga pressed forward, the bar coming to Melita's rescue on Abdilla's volley and Sapiano saving well on Prendergast.

Melita had a chance to snatch the points but a 74th-minute header from David Busuttil was cleared in time by Mansueto.

Referee: Mark Spiteri.

Mgarr United 1
Luqa St Andrews 0

Saviour Caruana's Mgarr United at last obtained their first victory of the season after beating Luqa St Andrews thanks to a first-half Matthew Schembri goal and the fine saves of goalkeeper Ernest Fenech.

After going close on a couple of occasions, Mgarr found the opponents' net in the 26th minute, Schembri scoring from a free-kick action.

On resumption, Luqa attacked for long stretches. After twice going close through Oliver Cutajar and Randolph Penza, in the 64th minute they were unlucky when another Penza effort hit the post.

It wasn't Penza's day as deep into stoppage time the woodwork again denied his team from an equaliser.

Referee: George Bitri.
